Fireworks for Vishu

Many people know about Diwali *. Diwali was on 27th October. I would like to share with you information about another festival, which is more popular for people of South India.  Vishu is traditionally celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala on April 14th of every year.  In the Malayalam calender, the new year starts on the first day of Chingam.  (April)  However people in the Malabar area consider Vishu as the astrological New year.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani.  Vishukkani means sighting the most auspicious thing at dawn on the Vishu day for being lucky throughout the year.  Another interesting fact is the Vishukkaineettam.  This means gifting money to children, servants and family members by elders of the family.  Vishu is also a day of feasting.  It is a festival of light and fireworks.
