A 'tense' situation

by Andy

An English teacher working in Edinburgh spent a lot of time marking grammatical errors in his students' written work.
He was always so busy and one day he sat at his desk, rubbing his eyes.

A learner asked, "What's the matter, Andy?"

"Tense," he replied, describing how he felt.

After a slight pause the student tried again,
"What was the matter? What has been the matter? What might have been the matter... ?"
